Weekend på Rømø Weekend on Rømø

Latest news / Sidste nyt Posted on Wed, March 28, 2018 13:09:45

DK:

UK:
In the beginning of March,
Helle and Kim invited us to come and stay with them in a rented summer cottage
on Rømø (a small island in the waddensea at the west coast of Jutland). We were
looking forward to getting away from home, being with the nicest people (and
dogs) and taking walks at the Beach with the dogs – without lead.

The weather could be better;
it was cold and it rained some of the time. But so what? We had warm and
rainproof clothes.

As usual, Leif had brought his
camera and took some pictures of the three redheads.

It was so great to get away
from home and get some fresh air. And it makes it even better to spend the
weekend with friends who also value a nice meal, good wine and one or two
drinks 🙂

Av min røv / My arse hurts

DK

Hun virkede primært øm i bagparten.

UK
On Sunday, I noticed that Vixen seemed tired and introverted. I didn’t think much about it. We had been at the show most of Saturday, so I thought she was marked by the many expressions. Also, we were “babysitting” Martin’s two Labs all Sunday so I was guessing she just needed some time alone.

However, on Monday she was worse. She was really not feeling well. Sometimes she cheered up, but mostly she seemed a bit “depressed”. She didn’t want her dinner and this is not normal for her. Her temperature was 39.3 which is somewhat elevated but not enough for us to be very worried.

On Tuesday morning I called the vet. Vixen’s temperature had fallen to 39.1. We got an appointment after lunch. I didn’t feed her breakfast as I thought she might have to have general anaesthesia. I was wondering what could be wrong with her. It seemed to be a problem in her hind part so I thought of pyometra but it really wasn’t the right time in her cycle. I also considered water tail, but even if her tail was just hanging it didn’t look as water tail. Then I considered that it could be her anal glands that were the problem. But then again – she seemed worse than what could be justified by filled anal glands.

I gave Stella the Vet a quick update on my observations and thoughts. She quickly concluded that the problem was the anal glands. They were not just filled; a huge abscess had formed in one of them and it was so sore that she wasn’t allowed to touch it. The other one also needed to be emptied. What came out of it had the same consistency as putty. Not all all strange that Vixen didn’t feel well.

I left Vixen at the vet’s who put her in general anaesthesia to empty the abscess, rinse the glands and put antibiotic into them. I got some pain killers and penicillin for further treatment during the next week.

The rest of the day, Vixen was really uncomfortable and she hadn’t improved by Wednesday. She wasn’t able to settle down and was hystrically licking her behind. I wasn’t comfortable with the fact that she felt this bad and I didn’t like the constant licking her behind. A dog’s tongue is not the most hygienic. And things could easily turn to the worse if bacteria found their way to her anal glands. So I talked to Stella the Vet and we agreed that I should try adrenocortical hormone instead of the pain killers. Half an hour later after the first 3 x 4 mg adrenocortical hormone she calmed down. It was so nice to see.

On Tuesday next week she will be checked by the vet. I still give her both penicillin and Cortison. I am phasing out the adrenocortical hormone so that she will only have 1 x 4 mg when I see the vet on Tuesday.

You might think that it is an overreaction to be this worried about problems with the anal glands. But before I knew what the problem was, I feared the worse. We have just seen Cookie become very ill. I November last year we lost Daisy, and i March last year we lost Chili. So yes, I was really scared that it could be something really bad. Fortunately, it turned out to be pretty harmless – and I am grateful for that.

Årets første klubudstilling / First club show of the year

Latest news / Sidste nyt Posted on Mon, February 12, 2018 19:49:08

DK:

Da vi nu alligevel var i Vonge for at blive hædret som Årets Jagttoller
2017, kunne Vixen jo ligeså godt blive tilmeldt udstillingen.

lidt for faldende, ønsker mere vinkling i bagpart, udmærket vejrbeskyttende pels,
dejligt temperament, lidt trange bagbensbevægelse, kommer godt imod, god
skridtlængde i fronten, tilstrækkelig drive bag.

Her kom hun dog til kort. Der var fem tæver i klassen. Championtæven blev ikke
placeret, og Vixen blev fjerde bedste tæve.

Vixens kritik lød:

6 årig tæve i flot kondition, god størrelse, veludviklet og
feminin, rigtig godt skåret hoved, prima udtryk, korrekt bid, passende udviklet
næseparti, god bredde på skallen, velansatte ører, tilstrækkelig lang hals,
prima ryglinie, velvinklet fremme, tilstrækkelig vinklet bag, prima

UK:

Now that we were in
Vonge to be awarded with the trophy for Hunting Toller of the Year 2017, I
might as well enter Vixen to the show. So I did. I also managed to persuade two
of the Poké-kids to participate. Cookie was supposed to have participated also,
but due to her illness and the cortisone treatment she had to stay home.

The first family member
to enter the ring was Tessa (Wildmountain Tollers Eevee) and Alba (Wildmountain
Tollers Mew). They were both entered in the Junior Class.

Both girls did so
well. Their running had improved a lot and they were both doing well standing. Both
were awarded a Very Good and were placed as no. 3 and 4 in a class of four
bitches.

Tessa’s critique:

14 months old, good size,
well-proportioned, excellent head, nose narrows as required, enough
width of skull, nice dark eyes, excellent set ears, good length of
neck, upper line could be stronger, descends a little behind shoulders and rises
towards croup, nice front, well-angled shoulders, correct web between toes, a
bit stronger legs would be desirable for her size, tail is set too low, loin
too sloping, more angulation in rear part is desirable, excellent weather-proof
coat, lovely temperament, hind leg movement a bit tight, moves well when
running towards you, nice length of pace in the front, enough drive back.

Alba’s critique:

14 months old, good size,
well-proportioned, feminine head, would prefer more width of skull, a bit more
developed nose, correct set ears but would prefer them set closer to
the head, beautiful dark eyes, correct bite, correct length of neck, upper line
could be better, descends behind shoulder and rises towards croup, croup is too
sloping, tail is set too low, correct web between toes, bones a bit too thin for
her size, excellent coat, moves sound and good, nice length of pace, come and
goes in a parallel , good temperament.

Alba was not at all impressed
and decided to poo in the show ring. I have to stress, that she had been walked
and had pooed just before they went into the ring.

Vixen was competing in
the working class and there were only two dogs in this class. To my surprise she
received an Excellent and a CK (champion quality). This meant that she had to
compete for best bitch. She competed against five bitches and became 4th
best bitch as the champion bitch wasn’t placed.

Vixen’s critique:

6 year old bitch in excellent
condition, good size, well-developed and feminine, really nice shaped head,
excellent expression, correct bite, appropriate developed nose, good width of
skull, well-set ears, adequate long neck, excellent upper line, well-angulated
in front, appropriate angulated behind, excellent quality of coat, nice
temperament, correct web between toes, moves a little narrow behind, nice from
the side and moves well towards.

Judge was Kresten Scheel. He
was very pleasant and very considerate towards the dogs. He gave an open critique
which I like as I always lean something.

I must admit that I was pretty
surprised by the show results. Show is not our force so it was even more
amazing that we did it with a good result. All in all, it was a very nice day
in Vonge.

Årets Jagttoller 2017 / Hunting Toller of the Year 2017

Latest news / Sidste nyt Posted on Mon, February 12, 2018 11:07:08

DK:
at få overrakt pokalen for Årets Jagttoller 2017.

UK:
This Saturday, Vixen
and I went to the Toller club’s first show this year to be presented with the trophy
for Hunting Toller of the Year 2017.

You are eligible for
this titel by participating in the Toller club’s toller hunting tests. Every
prize at every level (beginner, open, and winner) gives a number of points –
and the two best results counts. As to Vixen, these results were a 1. prize in beginners’
class (20 points) and a 2. prize in open class (21 points). This amounted to 41 points – only 1 single
point ahead of the three that were places second. One of those was Helle and
Cookie (Wildmountain Tollers Clever Cookie). Their highest points were 2 x 1. prizes in
beginners’ class.

I am so happy and
proud to win this title for the second year. Vixen and I have had our
challenges (mostly me as Vixen is an almost perfect dog) and we started a bit
late doing hunting training and hunting tests in a serious way. Vixen had some
stress issues and thus some noise issues. There still is some stress and sometimes
a bit of noise. But now I have learned to accept it. This doesn’t mean that I
don’t still try to reduce both but I realize that it is unrealistic to expect
that both stress and noise will disappear completely.

I am just as happy and
proud of Helle and Cookie. They are just such a great team and Helle has
managed to get some of the things that I struggle with under control. Now I
just hope that Cookie recovers well from the IMRD and the cortisone treatment
so that they can continue their hunting training and hunting tests.

Udstilling næste weekend / Club show next weekend

Latest news / Sidste nyt Posted on Mon, February 05, 2018 13:07:46

DK:

UK:
On Saturday, Vixen will be attending this years’ first Club show. She will also be presented with the Award “Hunting Toller of the Year 2017”.

As always when I enter her to a show she starts to shed! So right now she has only half the coat as when she is in full coat.

I haven’t trimmed her for a very long time. As I don’t want her to look to newly trimmed at the show, I spent an hour yesterday trimming her. So now her paws, ears, the long hairs on her front legs and her “ass beard” were trimmed.

However, I need to do a Little adjusting later in the week.

Weekendtur med tøserne / Weekend trip with the girls

Latest news / Sidste nyt Posted on Tue, January 30, 2018 22:37:55

DK:

What’s not to like?

UK:
This weekend was spent with Helle, Majbrit and Jeanette in Mosevrå (at the westcoast of Jutland) in Jeanette’s and Ove’s wonderful, new weekend cottage.

We met Saturday for breakfast. We had brought our dogs so after breakfast we spent 2-3 hours training the dogs in the fantastic terrain that surrounds the house. The res of the day was spent playing Partners, eating a delicous Indian dinner, drinking rosé and Aperol Spritzer. I should mention that Helle and I won 4 out of 4 times in Partners smiley

On Sunday, we went for a walk at the Beach in Vejers. There was a strong breeze from west so I couldn’t be bette.

After a late lunch we went our separate ways. It is great to be able to spend two days with good friends to talk, train dogs, eat and dring. What’s not to like?

Tour d’Europe

Latest news / Sidste nyt Posted on Fri, January 19, 2018 19:04:51

DK:

UK:
I have just returned from a 5 day trip to Germany and Belgium.

The reason for the trip was that June and Odd (www.duckcharmers.com) wanted to mate two bitches. And as I am not that
busy at the moment, I didn’t hesitate to say yes, when June asked me, if I
wanted to join her on the trip.

June and I left on Friday afternoon. First stop was in
Coburg, Germany, where Kylie and George had one – but undoubtly sucessfull –
mating. Then we continued on to Booischot in Belgium where Watson was waiting
impatiently on Valborg. This also went well; they had to nice matings.

On Tuesday morning, we started the trip back to
Denmark. Now, we jusst have to wait and see if the trip was worth the time and
money.
